Preventing the Tifosi rampant at the sight of the home team’s initial Monza win because 2010, Leclerc kept Hamilton at bay for most of the race – even though a wheel-to-wheel scrap and then a mistake at the chicane – before the world winner made a mistake and Bottas took over Mercedes’ assault for the closing laps.
However, Leclerc didn’t buckle when confronted with a Mercedes, claiming back-to-back victories after his F1 victory at Spa.
Hamilton finished third but did assert an extra bonus point for the fastest lap. His name lead closes to 63 points.
However, it was a day to overlook the other Ferrari driver – Sebastian Vettel.
The German completed outside the points from 13th after spinning from fourth early on and then collecting a 10s punishment since he rejoined the circuit for pushing Lance Stroll.
Renault enjoyed a day, using Daniel Ricciardo a strong fourth ahead of team-mate Nico Hulkenberg.
